I discovered a different side of Kolkata through its heritage buildings and neighbourhood eateries

I’ve always thought of Kolkata as having beautiful ancient buildings, bustling trams, bookshops, and a passion for food. However, walking around the city revealed a side I might have overlooked if I had followed the typical sightseeing itinerary. Behind the well-known sites were old homes with elaborate balconies, peaceful streets with historic stores, and restaurants where people paused for a leisurely cup of tea or a quick supper.

I began with the old buildings of North Kolkata

One of the first areas I wanted to visit was North Kolkata. With their winding streets, classic homes, and opulent mansions that evoke the city’s history, its older communities have a unique personality. While some buildings still have ornate balconies, arched windows, and columns, others have deteriorated with time.

The historic homes in the Bagbazar and Shyambazar neighbourhoods piqued my curiosity. I noticed a faded nameplate, a carved entryway, and a courtyard through an open entrance while strolling.

The environment felt different from the more commercial parts of Kolkata. There were local markets, small temples, neighbourhood shops and people going about their routines. I liked that the area did not feel arranged for visitors. Its history was simply part of everyday life.

I found my way to the neighbourhood eateries in Kolkata

In my exploration, food was as important as architecture. Neighbourhood restaurants in Kolkata are frequently small establishments with straightforward seating and menus that highlight well-known favourites. Instead of scheduling every meal around a well-known culinary location, I liked the concept of stopping at a modest eatery.

I really liked the mix of vintage bookshops, student hangouts, and cheap cuisine in places like College Street. The neighbourhood’s cafés and restaurants reflect its longstanding link with education and intellectual life. It was simple to see myself spending a day reading before settling up for a warm meal.

I also wanted to sample some common Bengali food in the city. Rolls, fried foods, and other street-side snacks were not the same as a supper of rice, dal, vegetables, and sweets. Naturally, Kolkata’s culinary culture goes far beyond Bengali food, and each of its bakeries, Chinese restaurants, and vintage candy stores has its own fan base.

What stuck with me was how food fit into the city’s routine, rather than a specific restaurant. Before heading to work, people stopped for breakfast, had tea with friends, then went back to their favourite stores for snacks. These customs gave the dining experience a strong sense of connection to the local way of life.

I explored Kolkata’s College Street at an unhurried pace

For those who appreciate reading and historic urban areas, College Street is worthwhile. Unlike the refined commercial areas found elsewhere, the street bookstalls, used books, and academic stores provide a unique setting.

I also visited the adjoining Indian Coffee House, a well-known historical gathering spot due to its vintage ambience. The conversations at the tables are as fascinating as the coffee itself. The thought of stopping there after exploring the nearby streets appealed to me.

I planned my days around Kolkata city’s pace

I found it helpful to focus on one area because Kolkata’s traffic and distances may make an ambitious agenda exhausting. For longer trips, the Metro and cabs can be helpful, although walking is best in small heritage neighbourhoods. Enjoying walks outside before the day gets too hot or crowded can also be easy if you go early.

I wanted the journey to begin comfortably. So I chose a more premium flying experience. The extra space, a comfortable seat, hot meals, and time to settle in made the flight feel less tiring. I appreciated arriving with the energy to explore the city rather than taking a long break before starting the day. For me, business class flights to Kolkata were about making the travel experience more comfortable from the outset.

I left with a more personal impression of Kolkata

While Kolkata’s majestic structures and well-known dining establishments are worth exploring, I discovered the city’s personality in its subdued features, like the historic homes in North Kolkata, the bustling bookshops on College Street, and the local restaurants serving comforting fare. Each location provided a unique perspective without drawing undue attention.

I would leave even more time for leisurely walking. I would return to the older lanes, pause wherever the food was enticing, and pay more attention to the structures I had initially passed. Spending time in the neighbourhoods where the city goes about its daily business, rather than just visiting its landmarks, was one of the greatest ways to experience Kolkata.
